RUSSELL’S RECORD AGAIN AT TALLADEGA G.P.R.

By Larry Lawrence
Talladega, AL. FEB. 12

Newly signed Yoshimura rider Scott Russell showed up at the WERA regional sprint race at the Talladega Grand Prix Raceway, and predictably went out and dominated the races he entered. Now that Russell is a factory rider, some might have expected the Georgian to take it easy in preparation of Daytona. “I hurt my wrist at a practice session at Daytona. I wanted to come out and make sure that it was O.K..” explained Russell. Even though the wrist was still aching, Russell was riding well enough to set a new record of 59.21 at the 1.3 mile circuit. Russell was riding a Yoshimura/EBC Brakes/ AGV Helmets sponsored GSX-R 750.

Russell broke the record (which he held previously) in the Formula USA event. Kurt Hall and Cam Roos led the race for the first two laps before Russell turned up the juice and pulled away setting the record in the process.

The battle for second went down to the final lap. Jay Denham caught Hall and Roos, and the three WERA sprint champions put on a show. At the white flag Roos went around the outside to pass Hall on turn one only to run wide on the next turn and lose the advantage. Denham had the same idea as Hall and started to run underneath Roos but Roos had other ideas and slammed the door on Denham. Roos made one last attempt to repass Hall at the end of the back straight but couldn’t pull it off. Russell meanwhile had won the race easily running the same Vic Fasola tuned GSX-R 750, that he won the Suzuki final last November. This time however the bike was wearing Michelin radials instead of Dunlops. Russell was a Dunlop sponsored rider last year, but part of his Yoshimura deal was that he would run Michelins. Russell discounted the tire factor in his record setting run. “I would have set the record just as easily on Dunlops.”

Russell went on to win the A and B Superbike races quite convincingly. The only surprise was that first year expert Todd Hoge led Russell for two laps in the A Superbike event. Hoge was riding one of the new Yamaha FZR 600s.

Only the excellent riding skills of Kurt Hall kept the C Superbike race from becoming a FZR 600 benefit. Hall rode the wheels off his 600 Katana to win that contest ahead of five FZR’s. Hall came away with $125 in Action Honda/ Suzuki contingency certificates.

The FZR 600 also proved to be an excellent mount for novice Billy Eisenacher. Eisenacher rode his Kawasaki/ Yamaha of Marietta to three wins. Eisenacher won $150 in Metzeler contingency for his efforts.

Former Louisville motocross buddies Kurt Hall and Jay Denham, teamed up to win the regional two hour endurance race on Saturday. The team rode Denham’s GSX-R 1100, and according to Denham the bike had not been touched since he won the A Production title on it last year. “It has the same tires, oil, everything from last year. I didn’t even get a chance to wash it. The team pocketed $205 for their efforts.
