Peter Starr sent me this cool memento of the poster for the 1984 Transatlantic Match Races (aka the Anglo-American Match Races in earlier years). This series of races started in 1971 and for the first time showed the international road racing world that Americans could do more than go fast around horse tracks. The event continued through the mid—to-late 1980s and then revived once in 1991. There has been some talk of renewing the series as a MotoAmerica vs. BSB event. The Brits, racing on their home circuits, generally beat the Yanks, but the Americans came through with victories every few years to keep things interesting, including winning in ’84 when this poster was issued. I think most road racing fans would love to see a revival of the races.
