For years Mike Smith was one of the leading riders in AMA Superbike competition. While Smith raced in the American domestic series almost exclusively, he did get a couple of World Superbike rides during the golden age of the championship from the mid-to-late-1990s.
Here Smith races the No. 68 Muzzy Kawasaki in front of Piergiorgio Bontempi (No. 8 Kawasaki Italy Bertocchi) and Ioannis Boustas (No. 38 Marlboro Team Boustas Ducati) in race two at Laguna Seca during the 1996 World Superbike event there. In the first race Smith finished just behind Bontempi and Boustas, but he came back and turned the tables to barely edge Bontempi in race two. Boustas’ Ducati broke in the second leg. Smith finished the day with a pair of 15th-place results, scoring world championship points.
Of Smith’s six WSBK starts, his best result came in 1995 when he finished 11th in Laguna race one on the Fast by Ferracci Ducati.
