It was somewhat of a surprise podium in race two of the Formula USA race at Daytona International Speedway during the Race of Champions in October of 1996. Fritz Kling took the win on the Dutchman Racing Yamaha in a tight battle over Tray Batey on the Valvoline Suzuki. Mike Sullivan, who was normally an AMA 250GP rider, showed his skills on the big-bore F-USA bikes, taking a strong third on the Zlock Racing Kawasaki.
The fight between Kling and Batey came down to a last-lap drafting battle. Batey positioned himself perfectly in the draft of Kling’s bike, but Kling’s Dutchman Yamaha was too strong on top and he held off Batey for the victory.
A couple of hours earlier Batey had already wrapped up the 1996 Formula USA Championship with a conservative sixth-place finish in race one.
