Yoshimura Suzuki rider Kevin Schwantz takes the win in the two-leg event at Willow Springs Raceway on April 28. 1985
Allen Reinl of Redline Video had a bird’s-eye view of the 1985 AMA Superbike National at Willow Springs. Reinl didn’t know it at the time, but he was about to capture on VHS tape a historic victory. That day Kevin Schwantz raced the Yoshimura Suzuki GS750ES to win both legs and the overall, marking his first AMA national road race win. Schwantz would go on to become 500cc Motorcycle Grand Prix World Champion in 1993.
Besides Schwantz there were great performances at Willow that weekend with Honda’s Fred Merkel overcoming illness to finish second. Wes Cooley was amazing on a privateer Honda to take third. Local riders Todd Brubaker and Scott Gray stunned everyone with their jaw-dropping rides, both beating most of the AMA Superbike regulars at Willow that day.
