Summers Wins GNCC Championship (1996)

This photo shows two of the all-time greats of off-road motorcycle racing in America. This is 1995 AMA Grand National Cross Country (GNCC) Champion Scott Plessinger (KTM sweater) handing off the No. 1 plate to Scott Summers, who had just clinched the 1996 GNCC title after a third-place finish at the muddy Mt. Morris, Pennsylvania round. It marked the fourth GNCC title for Summers, who also won the title in 1990, ’91 and ’92. He remarked how much tougher the series was in ’96 than it was the first year he won the title. Summers would go on to win the championship again in 1997, making it five GNCC titles for the Honda rider from Petersburg, Kentucky. (Jim Talkington photo)
