Louisville’s Race of Champions (1976)

Another great one from the photo collection from @stusshots. This is the 1976 Race of Champions from Louisville Downs. This was a prestigious event because it was open only to riders who’d won races on the 1976 Camel Pro tour. Eleven qualified riders signed to compete in the event, which carried $16,000 purse and was filmed to be shown on the CBS Sports Spectacular. Riders lined up for the start (from l to r) are Ted Boody (No. 84X), Hank Scott (No. 14), Chuck Joyner (No. 60), Rick Hocking (No. 13), Gary Scott (No. 1), Bubba Rush (No. 24), Mike Kidd (No. 72), Terry Poovey (No. 96N), Steve Eklund (No. 74Z), Rex Beauchamp (No. 31) and Jay Springsteen (No. 25). “Springer” won the race over Gary Scott and Kidd.
