Heinz Kinigadner - Two-time 250cc World Motocross Champion

When most of the Japanese factories pulled out World Championship 250cc Motocross after 1983 a new breed of riders emerged. Reporter Jim Greening said that the 250 series in the mid-1980s was a more relaxed affair, harkening back to the roots of scrambles racing. With an all-privateer field, riders were accessible to fans and media and no one seemed to notice the factories weren’t around.

Heinz Kinigadner became an instant hero in his native Austria when he won the 1984 and ’85 250 World Championships riding the Austrian-built KTM. Some say Kinigadner was factory support, but it was meager even by the standards of the day. His family owned a large bakery and his family allowed him more or less permanent leave of absence so he could pursue his career in motocross racing.
